Our stairs and upstairs bedrooms are carpeted but the whole ground floor is tile and wood. Do you charge differently for that kind of layout?

No, and it's the most common layout we see in Calabasas: carpet confined to the stairs, bedrooms and a bonus room over the garage, with hard surfaces below. We quote by the carpeted areas we actually clean, and stairs are counted separately from rooms because each tread takes hand work. You'll get a firm quote before anything gets wet, so there are no surprises when we're partway up the staircase. Having hard floors downstairs helps us: we can run hose lines with less risk to your carpet and set up outside the living space.

Question 2

The traffic lanes in our plush carpet look matted and darker than the rest of the room. Can that come back?

Usually a good part of it, though we'll be straight with you about how much. Thick cut pile and higher-end plush hide soil well at first, then show wear all at once as the fibers get crushed and abraded in the walkways. Cleaning removes the soil and lifts the pile, so the color evens out and the lane looks much closer to the surrounding carpet. What cleaning cannot undo is fiber that's been physically worn. If the tips are abraded from years of foot traffic on a stair edge or a bedroom doorway, the shading stays. We'll tell you which you're dealing with when we look at it, before we quote.

Question 3

After the last wildfire smoke event, our carpets smell and everything feels gritty. Is that something you handle?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and it's a regular call up here. Fine ash and smoke residue settles into carpet pile and doesn't vacuum out easily because the particles are small and cling to the fibers. Hot water extraction pulls out far more of it than a home vacuum will. Set expectations, though: if smoke got into the house broadly, carpet is one source of odor among several, and soft furnishings, filters and duct work matter too. We'll clean what we clean and be honest if we think the smell is coming from somewhere besides the floor.

How soon can you get out to us, and do you ever do same-day?

Same-day is sometimes possible, more often on weekdays and more often if you call in the morning. Otherwise we're typically booking within a few days. Calabasas jobs are usually scheduled as a block rather than squeezed between others, since a two-story home with stairs and several upstairs rooms takes real time. If you're on a tight deadline (a move-in, guests coming, an open house), say so when you call and we'll tell you honestly whether we can hit it rather than promising and rescheduling.

Faster than in most places. The hot, dry summers work in your favor, and with windows open and air moving, carpet is usually walkable in socks within a few hours and fully dry well before the day's out. Winter and overcast stretches run longer. We extract thoroughly rather than leaving the pile saturated, which matters most on stairs where you don't want damp treads. If you have large dogs, we'd keep them off until it's dry so they don't track decomposed granite and yard dirt straight back into clean carpet.
